Mission & Goals

Hiwa is a non-profit, non-governmental organization dedicated to the promotion of human rights, democratic values, and the rule of law, with a particular focus on the situation of Kurdish communities and other ethnic, religious, and social groups in Iran and the wider Middle East. The organization works to support civil society actors, human rights defenders, women’s rights advocates, and members of marginalized communities facing discrimination. Hiwa conducts research, documentation, and public awareness activities, and engages in dialogue with policymakers, international institutions, and civil society organizations to contribute to informed policy discussions. Its activities include advocacy, capacity-building, and cooperation with international partners, in line with international human rights standards and non-violent principles.

EU Legislative Interests

Hiwa engages with European Union institutions on human rights, democracy, and rule-of-law issues related to Iran and the broader Middle East, with a particular focus on the situation of Kurdish communities. Its work relates to EU policies on human rights and fundamental freedoms, including the EU Human Rights Action Plan, EU Guidelines on Human Rights Defenders, EU policies on ethnic and religious minorities, women’s rights, freedom of expression, and the EU’s external action toward Iran. Hiwa does not seek to influence legislation for commercial purposes, but contributes expert input, documentation, and civil-society perspectives to policy discussions, resolutions, and parliamentary debates.

Communication Activities

Hiwa’s communication activities include briefings with Members of the European Parliament and parliamentary staff, participation in hearings and delegation meetings, publication of reports and documentation on human rights violations, and public awareness initiatives related to the situation of Kurdish communities and other marginalized groups. Activities may include expert meetings, exhibitions, public events, media engagement, and cooperation with international human rights organizations, conducted in a non-violent, non-partisan, and non-commercial manner.

Hiwa is not currently a formal member of any associations, confederations, or networks at the European or international level. The organization cooperates on an ad hoc basis with civil society actors, human rights defenders, journalists, and advocacy groups for awareness-raising and policy dialogue purposes.

Organisation Members

Hiwa is a non-profit organization composed of a small core team of staff and volunteers organized across several thematic areas, including justice and accountability (Families of Justice), education and youth engagement, media and communications, advocacy for women’s equality, and advocacy related to athletes and sport. The organization also works with volunteers and contributors on a project and campaign basis.
