Mission & Goals
Háttér Society, founded in 1995, is the oldest and largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and intersex (LGBTQI) organization in Hungary. We work for a society in which no one is discriminated against because of their sexual orientation or gender identity, where all members of the LGBTQI community can live freely according to their identity, and receive appropriate support to solve the problems they might face. We promote the equality and well-being of LGBTQI people by (1) offering support services to LGBTQI people; (2) raising the awareness and promoting the self-organization of LGBTQI people; and (3) advocating for a legal system, public services and social attitudes in line with the needs of LGBTQI people.
EU Legislative Interests
We work to mainstream the human rights of LGBTQI people into all policy areas. We pay particular attention to anti-discrimination directives, EU internal human rights and rule of law mechanisms, EU LGBTIQ strategy, employment and social inclusion, gender equality initiatives, hate crime and hate speech, freedom of movement, asylum, data protection, policy initiatives regarding non-discrimination in the area of health and education. We currently work on the horizontal anti-discrimination directive, binding standards on equality bodies, the list of EU crimes in TFEU, the victims’ rights directive, the directive on the recognition of parenthood between Member States, and the directives on safety and quality of human blood and blood components, and on safety and quality of human tissues and cells.
