Mission & Goals
Grown bio is a biotechnology company that makes an biobased alternative for styrofoam (EPS). The technology makes use of growing mycelium and organic waste fibers into a shape and then killing the mycelium to make the product inert. The end result is a light and strong shape that can repalace styrofoam.
EU Legislative Interests
Grown bio wants to support the reduction and phasing out of EPS and other plastic foams in Europe. This objective is already defined by the EU as part of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, published on 30 november 2023. As an important element of this proposal, plastics - including plastic foam like Expanded PolyStyrene aka EPS - should be either re-used or recycled. For EPS this is not a realistic objective for two main reasons. First, EPS packaging will be polluted and damaged during it's use phase, which makes it difficult to re-use. Secondly recycling requires collection, which is not in place in most member states. With regards to this second reason, even if collection and recycling would be in place, end users will not take the effort to actually offer EPS for recycling: in the most favourable cased it is incinerated, but mostly it ends up as landfill. The landfilled styrene microparts cause damage to nature, serious risk for human health. The support that Grown bio can give is by offering EPS producting industries a solution in the form of a fully bio based and (home/marine) compostable protective packaging.
