Mission & Goals

The Greek Scientists Society (GSS) is the largest global network of Greek scientists and technologists, with over 33,000 members. GSS acts as a bridge between the scientific community and EU policymaking, advancing science-informed dialogue and stakeholder engagement. A key focus lies in supporting the long-term sustainability of research outcomes through Science-Policy-Society nexus initiatives, particularly in connection with COST Actions. GSS plays a leading role in dissemination and exploitation activities, translating collaborative research into actionable policy recommendations, spin-offs, and follow-up projects aligned with EU priorities. Through its post-Action initiatives—such as the Kinesis Innovation Center and the development of a digital biobank on Physical Activity—GSS exemplifies how research networks can deliver societal impact, support European Research Area (ERA) goals, and contribute to the evidence base for future EU legislation.

EU Legislative Interests

The Greek Scientists Society (GSS) actively engages with EU policies and initiatives that promote research valorisation, open science, and innovation. Our focus aligns with the following key areas: Horizon Europe (Regulation (EU) 2021/695) — through active participation in COST Actions, follow-up proposal support, and exploitation of research results. EU4Health Programme (Regulation (EU) 2021/522) — via GSS’s work on physical activity, healthy ageing, and public health data infrastructures. Digital Services Act (Regulation (EU) 2022/2065) — indirectly via digital biobank development and responsible data use in public health research. European Health Data Space Proposal (COM/2022/197 final) — through GSS initiatives promoting federated health data sharing and open science. Council Recommendation on a European Approach to Micro-Credentials (2022/C 243/02) — via GSS’s training activities and recognition of non-formal skills across its network. Council Conclusions on Research Assessment and Implementation of Open Science (10126/22) — by promoting transparent and collaborative scientific practices across COST and post-Action initiatives. European Innovation Council (EIC) — via support to researchers exploring innovative spin-offs and tech transfer pathways. European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) — through collaboration on education-research-business linkages and support for innovation-driven communities. Digital Europe Programme — via digital infrastructures developed under post-Action sustainability projects, including biobank and PA data platforms. Green Deal and the ‘Fit for 55’ Package — by promoting physical activity, health, and sustainable mobility as part of climate-resilient behavioural shifts.

Communication Activities

GSS targets EU policies that promote research valorisation, evidence-based policymaking, and cross-sectoral innovation.
