Mission & Goals
The Globalization and Localization Association (GALA) is a global, nonprofit trade association comprised of language services and technology providers, academic institutions, and organizations with translation/localization departments or teams. We build a supportive professional community by connecting professionals and organizations. We deliver programming and resources to help language industry professionals solve their professional challenges and achieve success.
EU Legislative Interests
GALA has been invited to participate in the EU Language Industry Expert Group (LIND - https://ec.europa.eu/info/departments/translation/language-industry-platform-lind_en) because of our expansive network and knowledge in the global language industry. We have an interest in tracking and influencing standards and regulations related to the education and training of language industry professionals and have a specific interest in the European Masters in Translation (EMT) program. We are also interested in policies on the teaching and learning of languages (programs promoting bilingualism and multilingualism). We have an interest in policies which preserve linguistic diversity and minority languages in Europe as well. Finally, we have an interest in data security policies that impact our members and community.
Communication Activities
GALA supports a Global Talent Special Interest Group (SIG) which focuses on the interdisciplinary training of professionals wishing to enter the global language industry. Through this SIG, we support curriculum development, offer mentoring for students, and share best practices for internships among language industry companies. We offer a scholarship to one to two students to travel and attend GALA's annual conference where they can access cutting edge content and a vast network of exceptional professionals. Our Academic Membership is free to any university offering training programs in translation, interpreting, and other language services and technologies. Several EMT universities are GALA members. Through membership, we offer students and instructors access to language business professionals and a vast body of knowledge and experience.
