Mission & Goals

The Global Forum for Media Development (GFMD) is an international network of over 200 journalism support and media development organisations working in around 70 countries. Established in 2005 in Amman, Jordan, and based in Brussels, GFMD’s core value is to support the creation and strengthening of journalism and free, independent, sustainable, and pluralistic news ecosystems, as defined by the declarations of UNESCO at conferences in Windhoek, Almaty, Santiago de Chile, Sana’a, and Sofia. Its main focus is to ensure proper collaboration as well as an exchange of information and experience among its members to create a strong, independent, and pluralistic media environment, which contributes to the development of empowered societies. Its secretariat is based in Brussels. It has played a fundamental role in global advocacy initiatives aimed at including access to information in the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) or the UN Summit of the Future.

Communication Activities

GFMD exists as a knowledge platform for the global media development community, where we leverage multi-sectoral expertise to provide the most current and practical knowledge and experience to our network. Together with over 200 members and partners working across more than 70 countries, we act together to support journalism and media through collaboration, knowledge exchange, and advocacy and seek to foster viable and independent journalism, greater transparency, and more pluralistic media environments. Established in 2020 by GFMD, the EU Media Advocacy Working Group (WG) is an informal network for organisations within journalism support, media development, digital rights, media freedom, and wider democracy support communities conducting advocacy work within EU institutions on media-related issues.
