Mission & Goals
GeSI’s mission is to harness digital innovation to tackle global sustainability challenges. We collaborate across the world with over one hundred partners including the European Union (EU), United Nations (UN), leading universities, small and medium enterprise business associations such as TCP in Taiwan, industry groups such as Connect Europe, and non-profits such as the Carbon Disclosure Project. Our goal is to drive a world where digital innovation fosters extraordinary social, economic, and environmental progress, enhancing the quality of life for everyone. By partnering with forward-thinking collaborators worldwide, we are dedicated to leveraging technology to solve the world’s most pressing issues. Together, we aim to ensure that the digital revolution uplifts every individual while protecting our planet for generations to come.
EU Legislative Interests
GeSI works to raise awareness of the potential of digital and ICT to enable the transition to a low-carbon economy. While in the past most of our interactions with policy-makers have happened in global contexts such as the United Nations and the COP meetings on climate, the organization is now stepping up its activities in Brussels. This includes more active interaction with the European institutions on the Digital Single Market (ePrivacy Regulation, digital service tax Directive); the EU climate change work (in particular on the implementation of the Paris Agreement - the 2030 Climate and Energy Framework and the Energy Roadmap 2050); and the Sustainable Development Goals (2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, plus potential involvement in the multi-stakeholder platform for the implementation of the SDGs in the EU). With our EnablingRights campaign, we are also exploring the potential of ICT in supporting the work of human rights defenders, and calling for further collaboration to advance the adoption of technology for human rights We participated in the European Green Digital Coalition, phase one, and have prepared a report, funded by DG CNECT in cooperation with other major industry associations such as Connect Europe (former ETNO), Digitaleurope, GSMA, and the European DIGITAL SME Alliance to contribute to the establishment of a science-based framework for the assessment of the net environmental impact of the ICT sector and set of digital solutions and use cases. GeSI participated in the tender for "The European Green Digital Coalition moves to Action - Preparatory Action", together with PricewaterhouseCoopers EU Services EESV and Carbon Trust Europe, and the consortium has been awarded the service contract.
Communication Activities
In 2021 GeSI, ETNO, Digital Europe, European Digital SME Alliance, was awarded the tender for the “European Parliament Pilot project-European Green Digital Coalition” which aims to contribute to the establishment of science-based framework for the assessment of the net environmental impact of ICT sector and a set of digital solutions and use cases. The final report was submitted the DG CNECT in March 2024. Since 2016 GeSI has co-organized/was featured in a number of events in Brussels on the themes of: digital for sustainable development (SMARTer2030 Europe launch, with ETNO); the role of ICT in the transition to a low-carbon economy (EIF event at the European Parliament); the enabling potential of ICT for human rights and the GeSI report #EnablingRights). In addition, GeSI is the official partner for digital and the ICT of the G-STIC conference series, held yearly in Brussels. In the past GeSI has also held thematic sessions under the umbrella of the Green Week, and was a partner of the European ICT for Energy Efficiency (ICT4EE) Forum together with DigitalEurope and TechAmerica Europe. In 2019 GeSI launched the Digital with Purpose initiative, a Movement of leaders joining forces in a race to deliver against the Paris Agreement and Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. In the framework of DWP, GeSI has organised an annual DWP Global Forum each year since its launch and is publishing annual reports which highlights progress as well as the collective commitment of the DWP community to advancing sustainability through digital transformation and innovation.
