Mission & Goals

The international non-profit Global Allergy and Asthma Excellence Network is dedicated to improving care and quality of life of people living with allergies, asthma, and related diseases. Our mission is to advance excellence in clinical care, research, education, and advocacy in the field of allergy and respiratory medicine. We bring together leading academic institutions, hospitals, and expert centres worldwide to: • Promote the implementation of evidence-based guidelines and best practices • Foster collaborative research and data sharing • Provide education and training for healthcare professionals • Advocate for stronger public health policies and awareness on allergy and asthma-related issues • Coordinate Centres of Excellence for the management of conditions such as anaphylaxis, urticaria, and food allergy Our work supports healthcare professionals and patients, with the ultimate goal of reducing the burden of allergic and respiratory diseases on individuals and society.

EU Legislative Interests

Main EU legislative proposals or policies targeted: • EU Pharmaceutical Strategy for Europe (COM(2020) 761 final) – particularly in relation to equitable access to allergy and asthma medications and addressing unmet needs in the treatment of rare allergic diseases. • European Health Data Space (EHDS) – focusing on ensuring the inclusion of allergy and respiratory disease data in the development of a common European health data infrastructure. • EU4Health Programme Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2021/522) – supporting actions to strengthen disease prevention and management, especially for chronic allergic and respiratory conditions. • Regulation on Artificial Intelligence (Artificial Intelligence Act) – monitoring its implications for AI-based diagnostic tools in allergy and asthma care. • Revision of the Ambient Air Quality Directives (Directives 2008/50/EC and 2004/107/EC) – advocating for improved air quality standards to protect individuals with asthma and allergic respiratory diseases. • EU Food Information to Consumers (FIC) Regulation (Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011) – particularly regarding clearer allergen labelling to improve safety for individuals with food allergies.

Communication Activities

The Global Allergy and Asthma Excellence Network has carried out a range of communication and outreach activities related to EU health, environment, and consumer safety policies: • Policy Briefs and Position Papers: The Global Allergy and Asthma Excellence Network has published and shared policy briefs on unmet medical needs in allergy and asthma care, recommendations for improving access to innovative treatments, and the role of health data in managing chronic diseases. These documents have been distributed to relevant EU policymakers, particularly in the context of the Pharmaceutical Strategy and EU4Health Programme. • Stakeholder Events and Expert Roundtables: The Global Allergy and Asthma Excellence Network experts regularly participate in and contribute to European Commission stakeholder consultations, workshops, and technical meetings related to air quality, chronic disease prevention, and food allergen labelling. The Network has also hosted expert panels on the integration of allergic diseases into public health policy frameworks. • European Parliament Engagement: In collaboration with other patient and professional organisations, the Global Allergy and Asthma Excellence Networkis currently preparing a policy symposium at the European Parliament to raise awareness about the burden of anaphylaxis and the need for harmonised care and data standards across the EU. • Scientific Publications and Reports: The Global Allergy and Asthma Excellence Network and its Centres of Excellence regularly publish research findings relevant to EU policy areas, including the burden of allergic diseases, health system gaps, and the need for harmonised treatment pathways across Europe. • Digital Outreach: The Global Allergy and Asthma Excellence Network leverages its website, newsletters, and professional network to inform stakeholders across the EU about relevant legislative developments and opportunities for engagement in allergy and asthma-related policy.
