Mission & Goals
GeneSprout Initiative is led by young plant scientists. We aim to be a voice of young plant scientists in the policy-making around New genomic techniques (NGTs) in Europe. Additionally, we are deeply committed to increasing public engagement and awareness about NGTs and their significance in agriculture. Core Objectives To voice the opinions of plant science students and young plant researchers in the policy-making of NGTs To engage in open dialogues with the general public about NGTs To develop easy to understand and accessible information platforms for all interested
EU Legislative Interests
We target the EU legislation and the EC legislative initiative for plants produced by certain new genomic techniques. (Directive 2001/18/EC, Regulation (EC) 1829/2003, Directive 2009/41/EC and Regulation (EC) 1830/2003 and Proposal for a REGULATION OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND OF THE COUNCIL on plants obtained by certain new genomic techniques and their food and feed, and amending Regulation (EU) 2017/625), in light of the Court of Justice’s judgment in Case C-528/16)
Communication Activities
New genomic techniques (NGTs) have the potential to change food production, health and the environment on a global scale. Open access, and easy-to understand knowledge about the techniques and their implications are still very limited. GeneSprout Initiative is involved in several projects to stimulate debates and increase knowledge on these New genomic techniques. We also are involved in policy events surrounding this topic to represent a voice for early career scientists. For example, we have participated in a high-level event organized by the European commission on NGTs and were invited for a research study as part of the impact assessment for New policies on new genomic techniques.
