Mission & Goals
Gebr. Heinemann is one of the world's most important retailers and distributors in the international travel market. In Europe, the company is the market leader and the only family-owned company among the global players in the travel-retail industry. Gebr. Heinemann operates Duty Free & Travel Value Shops, brand boutiques and concept stores under license at international airports as well as shops at border crossings and on board cruise ships. In addition, the company supplies airports, airlines, cruise ships, ferries and border shops worldwide with a constantly growing range of international branded goods from the perfume & cosmetics, wine & spirits, confectionery, delicatessen, tobacco products, fashion & accessories, watches & jewelry sectors and much more. Since its foundation in 1879, the family business has been based in what is now Hamburg's HafenCity and has been managed by members of the Heinemann family ever since.
EU Legislative Interests
Gebr. Heinemann supports the European Travel Retail Confederation in working with Members of the European Parliament as well as Representatives of EU-Institutions on relevant Directives and Regulations that are of interest to the travel-retail industry. This applies, for example, to EU Regulation No. 1169/2011, where we have supported a uniform language for food labeling throughout the EU. We are also following the developments of the VAT package for travel and tourism, possible amendments to the Tobacco Products Directive (2014/40/EU), particularly with regard to the impact on the travel-retail sector, as well as the introduction of national deposit return systems as part of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (P9_TA(2024)0318). In general, we follow European transport policy, in particular sea and air transport issues, legislation relating to products sold in travel retail, customs and taxation, including travelers allowances, and other relevant legislation for the travel-retail market.
