Mission & Goals

Guided by the belief that every life has equal value, the Gates Foundation works to help all people lead healthy, productive lives. In developing countries, it focuses on improving people’s health and giving them the chance to lift themselves out of hunger and extreme poverty. In the United States, it seeks to ensure that all people—especially those with the fewest resources—have access to the opportunities they need to succeed in school and life. Based in Seattle, Washington, the foundation is led by CEO Mark Suzman under the direction of its board of directors. The Foundation is represented in the following countries: UK, Germany, US, China, India, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Kenya, Senegal, and South Africa.

EU Legislative Interests

Main EU initiatives covered the year before by activities falling under the scope of the Transparency Register: - Attendance of meetings and conferences related to development (e.g., Global Gateway Forum) - Bilateral meetings with DG International Partnerships, DG Research, DG AGRI staff on global health and agriculture issues related to Research and Development, nutrition, Sustainable Development Goals and broader health, gender and agriculture policies, as well as DG SANTE and HERA on global health - The Gates Foundation is registered in the US as a 501(c)(3) private foundation and therefore does not engage in advocacy related to legislation or legislative activities

Member Of

The Gates Foundation is a philanthropy, so we have provided funding to many grantees. Information on our grant-making and financials are here: https://www.gatesfoundation.org/about/committed-grants. We are a member of Philea (Philanthropy Europe Association), and jointly set up GLOWACON, the Global Consortium for Wastewater and Environmental Surveillance for Public Health, with DG HERA.

Organisation Members

We are not a membership organisation. The Gates Foundation and the Gates Foundation Trust are tax-exempt private foundations. The trust holds and manages the donated investment assets from Bill Gates, Melinda French Gates, and Warren Buffett. The proceeds from the investments are transferred to the foundation. The foundation then distributes funds in the form of grants, direct charitable expenses, program-related investments, and operational expenses. Affiliated entities:  Gates Philanthropy Partners (GPP) is a public charity affiliated with the foundation. Donors’ gifts are used to grant funds in alignment with the foundation’s mission. The foundation supports the general operations of GPP. GPP is included in the consolidated financial statements of the foundation, but files a separate tax return (https://www.gatesphilanthropypartners.org/about).  Gates Agricultural Innovations, LLC (Gates Ag One) is a wholly owned not-for-profit subsidiary of the foundation. Gates Ag One is included in the consolidated financial statements and tax return of the foundation. (https://www.gatesagone.org/frequently-asked-questions/).  The Gates Medical Research Institute (Gates MRI) is a 501(c)(3) public charity medical research organization affiliated with the foundation. Gates MRI is included in the consolidated financial statements of the foundation, but files a separate tax return (https://www.gatesmri.org/about-us/). More about our affiliated entities here: https://docs.gatesfoundation.org/documents/guide_to_financials.pdf.
