Mission & Goals

Gas Networks Ireland (GNI) is the owner and operator of the Natural Gas Transmission and Distribution Systems in Ireland. GNI is certified as a Full Ownership Unbundled Transmission System Operator (TSO) in accordance with EU Directive 2009/73/EC and Regulation (EC) 715/2009 by the Commission for Regulation of Utilities in Ireland. GNI has a subsidiary company, GNI (UK) Ltd. which is a similarly certified TSO, which owns and operates certain Natural Gas Transmission assets in Northern Ireland and Scotland. GNI is involved in the transportation of Natural Gas for industrial, commercial and domestic purposes. Gas Networks Ireland is actively engaged in promoting the role the gas network can play in achieving a decarbonised energy system through the introduction of Biomethane and Hydrogen onto the network as well as advocating for the role of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)/bio-CNG for its use as a transport fuel.
