Mission & Goals

Violence is preventable. Therefore, the NGO Garance focusses on everything that one can do before violence emerges – to prevent that it emerges. We tackle the risk factors that make certain population groups more vulnerable for violence, particularly women and girls. Our vision is a world where each person can live in safety (without violence or discrimination) and realise their full potential. We work according to our values (empowerment, inclusion, solidarity and participation) and principles (reliability, accountability, transparency, intersectionality). Three major objectives guide everything we do: - Strengthening the power and safety of women and other groups made vulnerable through systemic oppression - Advocating for the primary prevention of gender-based violence - Developing feminist self-defence

EU Legislative Interests

Garance strives to promote feminist self-defence as an efficient means for the primary prevention of gender-based violence. We mostly do this on the regional and national level, but whenever an opportunity occurs, we also work with European decision makers, in particular as an active member of Women Against Violence Europe and EuroCenralAsian Lesbian Community. We are interested in the EU Gender Equality Strategy, Disability Strategy and Youth Strategy, as well as in directives on violence-related issues (victims rights directive, violence against women directive...).

Communication Activities

Garance participated in several EP hearings and EC consultations and events in the field of gender equality and combatting violence against women and girls. Garance also participated in the consultation process for the EU directive on violence against women and domestic violence. As a board member of Women Against Violence Europe, a Garance representatives spoke at several public and closed events at the EP on the directive, as well as on the revision of the Victims' Rights Directive.
