Mission & Goals
F3 – Future of Fish Feed is a collaborative research and advocacy initiative working to accelerate the development and adoption of alternative aquaculture feeds that are free of wild-caught marine ingredients, such as fishmeal, fish oil, and krill. Our goal is to support a more sustainable, resilient, and scalable global aquaculture industry by promoting innovation in aquafeed formulation and reducing pressure on wild fisheries. Aquaculture is the fastest-growing food production sector, yet it remains heavily reliant on inputs derived from wild fish. This dependence places strain on marine ecosystems and limits the scalability of aquaculture. F3 promotes fish-free feeds by combining F3 Challenges (incentive prizes - https://f3challenge.org/) , F3 FIN (research - https://f3fin.org/) , knowledge-sharing, and stakeholder engagement to support the adoption of sustainable and scalable ingredients like microbial proteins, algal oils, insect meals, and agricultural byproducts.
EU Legislative Interests
- EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 - EU farm to Fork strategy - EU Strategic Guidelines for Sustainable and Competitive Aquaculture (2021–2030) Please note that we have not formerly targeted these policies, but we see synergies in these policies.
Communication Activities
Future of Fish Feed (F3) is in the early stages of engaging with EU institutions and stakeholders. While our direct contact has been limited so far, our mission and work align closely with several key EU policy priorities related to sustainability, marine biodiversity, and food systems transformation. We would like greater awareness of our initiatives so that there can be greater participation by EU member states and their companies in our F3 initiatives.
