Mission & Goals

The Fur Free Alliance exists to end the exploitation and killing of animals for fur. The Alliance is an international coalition that consists of more than 50 animal protection groups, based in more than 35 countries around the world, working collaboratively to bring about the end of fur farming and fur trapping, using wholly peaceful means. The coalition focuses on three inter-related priority areas vital in the campaign to end the fur trade: political, corporate and consumer.

EU Legislative Interests

Farm to Fork Strategy and EU animal welfare law revision; Council Directive 98/58/EC concerning the protection of animals kept for farming purposes; Regulation (EC) No 1099/2009 on the protection of animals at the time of killing; Council Directive 93/119/EC on the protection of animals at the time of slaughter or killing; EU Biodiversity Strategy; Regulation (EU) No 1007/2011 on textile fibre names and related labelling and marking of the fibre composition of textile products; Regulation (EC) No 1007/2009 on trade in seal products

Communication Activities

On 20 July 2023, together with European Citizen Initiative (ECI) organisers, the Fur Free Alliance formally met with the European Commission to present the Fur Free Europe ECI, and signify the importance of a full harmonised ban on fur farms and on the placement of farmed fur products on the European market. On 21 January 2020, the Fur Free Alliance launched a new report at the Parliament on the fur industry's animal welfare scheme WelFur and how it fails to stop the suffering of animals on fur farms, including in-depth criticism of the WelFur protocols by renowned veterinarians such as Professor Emeritus Bo Algers. Between 22-25 January 2018, the Fur Free Alliance and Eurogroup for Animals organised the Make Fur History exhibition in the Parliament. The exhibition presented facts about the fur trade and the animals trapped, kept and killed for their fur, as well as the fur trade's WelFur program. On 27 September 2017, the FFA presented an international research report at the Parliament, that revealed a lack of compliance with the EU Textile Labelling Regulation (1007/2011) to alert consumers to the presence of real animal fur in textile products.
