Mission & Goals

FIERI is an indipendent research institute specialising on migration, mobility, diversity and inclusion/exclusion processes. Since its foundation in 2001, it is strongly committed to a comparative and interdisciplinary approach to the study of the social and political transformations associated with growing population mobility and cultural diversity. FIERI adopts a comprehensive view of those changes which goes beyond an exclusive focus on migrants and their descendants, and considers instead the whole society and local communities as transformed by migration and mobility. FIERI is actively engaged in European and international networks and, at the same time, deeply rooted in the Italian context also through proactive interactions with policy, media and civil society.

EU Legislative Interests

As a research institute specialising on migration and migration policies, generating policy-relevant knowledge is a key institutional mission for FIERI. With specific regard to EU-level policies, we monitor and analyse all migration- and mobility-related policies amongst which, in particular: legal migration with special regard to labour migration, the external dimension of migration policies, asylum and international protection, policies on borders and irregular migration, integration, intra-EU mobility, anti-discrimination. In 2025, we have devoted specific research attention to the production and impact of media and societal narratives on migration, to irregular working conditions of migrants and refugees, and to migrants' upskilling and reskilling as a way to cope with labour shortages.

Communication Activities

Several of our projects have a European dimension due to the topic (e.g. research on EU-level policymaking) and/or to the source of funding. Amongst our main ongoing or recently concluded projects that are benefitting of EU funding, are the following: EU-funded projects: - http://www.medreset.eu/ (2016 – 2019). Main policy focus of FIERI’s role in the project: to understand the causes and consequences of migration narratives and how them become dominant over others in public and political debates. - Dignity For Irregular Migrants in EU Farm2Fork Labour Markets (DignityFIRM) (2023-2025). Main policy focus of FIERI’s role in the project: policies at different levels (EU, national, local) to counter illegal employment of migrants with particular regard to the food sector. - https://gs4s.eu/ Global Strategy for Skills, Migration, and Development (GS4S) (2024-2026). FIERI's research role is focused on the potential for re-skilling and up-skilling of migrants as a means to cope with structural labour shortages.
