Mission & Goals
Forbidden Stories is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to continue the investigations of reporters who have been silenced through imprisonment, abduction or murder around the world. Forbidden Stories keeps the stories of silenced journalists alive through collaborative journalism. In doing so, it sends a powerful message to enemies of press freedom: killing the journalist won’t kill the story. Through the SafeBox Network mechanism, Forbidden Stories also ensures that journalists under threat can secure their information, and that their work will not disappear should anything happen to them. The aim of the organization is twofold: to deter violence against journalists, and to ensure access to information of public interest for as many people as possible around the world, on issues such as the environment, health, human rights, organized crime, corruption, armed conflict, & disinformation.
EU Legislative Interests
Forbidden Stories does not target policies or legislation, and instead works in defense of media freedom through its investigative journalism activities. The following pieces of EU legislation and regulations are however of relevance for Forbidden Stories' work: - European Data Strategy - Recommendation on the protection, safety and empowerment of journalists - European Media and Audiovisual Action Plan - European Democracy Action Plan - European Democracy Shield
