Mission & Goals
In accordance with its statutes, FTE has the purpose of promoting respect for human rights in the context of criminal justice in the European Union and the wider Council of Europe Area, and to promote action by the European Union and other regional organisations and national governments in Europe with the aim of reinforcing respect for human rights in the criminal justice context at the international level. In pursuit of this goal the organisation’s remit includes: - Creation and management of networks of experts in criminal justice and human rights - Undertaking research and surveys - Developing, coordinating or taking part as an associate in common collaborations and projects - Coordinating and contributing to professional trainings, conferences, publications, films and public campaigns - Exerting influence over regional and national governments and organisations - Undertaking and supporting strategic litigation - Supporting victims of human rights violations - Collec (...)
EU Legislative Interests
- Implementation of Directive 2010/64 on the right to interpretation and translation in criminal proceedings; Directive 2012/13/EU on the right to information in criminal proceedings; Directive 2013/48/EU on the right of access to a lawyer in criminal proceedings; Directive 2016/343 on the right to be presumed innocent and to be present at trial; Directive 2016/800 on special safeguards for children suspected and accused in criminal proceedings; Directive 2016/1919 on the right to legal aid ,and most recent E-Evidence Regulation 2023/1543 and AI Act 2024/1689.
