Mission & Goals
The Society aims to offer assistance and improve the contributions of veterinarians who work with animals utilized in scientific research. Additionally, a crucial goal is to encourage and distribute professional veterinary expertise pertaining to laboratory animal science and medicine. These objectives are accomplished through a variety of means, such as meetings, ongoing educational opportunities, discussions, and publications. The Society also endeavors to promote the development of veterinary knowledge and abilities in areas related to the breeding, health, well-being, and usage of laboratory animals. Moreover, the Society provides a platform for veterinarians to address topics that concern them within the realm of laboratory animal science, both in general and specifically in Europe.
EU Legislative Interests
Proposals relating to any update or amendment to Directive 2010/63 EU. With current revisions ongoing, draft implementing regulation - Ares(2025)1470705 (Alien Invasive Species) and the updating of Council Regulation (EC) No 1/2005 (Welfare of animals in transit)
Communication Activities
ESLAV is involved with the European Commission (DG ENVIRONMENT - Directorate B- Circular Economy & Green Growth - ENV.B.2 – Sustainable Chemicals) and several stakeholder organisations with the full and correct implementation and interpretation or the DIRECTIVE 2010/63/EU OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND OF THE COUNCIL of 22 September 2010 on the protection of animals used for scientific purposes. ESLAV organises annual scientific conferences in Europe with a primary focus on the care and welfare of laboratory animals.
