Mission & Goals

The European Music Therapy Confederation (EMTC) represents and supports national music therapy associations across Europe. Its objectives are to promote high professional standards, ethical practice, education, research, and collaboration in music therapy, and to strengthen the visibility and recognition of music therapy within health, social, and educational sectors at European level.

EU Legislative Interests

The EMTC follows and contributes to European discussions and strategies related to mental health, public health, wellbeing, inclusion, professional education and mobility, arts and health, and cross-border professional cooperation. Particular areas of interest include mental health promotion, accessibility of therapeutic services, professional standards and ethical practice, continuing professional development (CPD), and recognition of music therapy within European healthcare and educational contexts.

Communication Activities

The EMTC has participated in several European stakeholder and communication activities related to mental health, public health, and arts therapies. In April 2023, EMTC presented a poster at the European stakeholder event “A Comprehensive Approach to Mental Health”. Following this, EMTC was invited to contribute to the World Mental Health Day event in Brussels in October 2023, where representatives presented music therapy practice and facilitated a musical contribution highlighting the role of music therapy in Europe. In October 2023, EMTC also participated in the COST Connect event “Advancing Mental Health Research through Networking and Collaboration in Europe” in Brussels, presenting the structure and activities of the EMTC and discussing music therapy within European mental health contexts. EMTC contributes to communication and dissemination activities related to music therapy, mental health, professional standards, research, and continuing professional development through webinars, conferences, stakeholder events, publications, and online platforms, including participation in the EU Health Policy Platform.

Aktivíties related to EU stakeholder engagement are limited in scope and mainly involve participation in occasional meetings, webinars, networking activities, and communication initiatives. The organization does not maintain a dedicated EU affairs office, employ professional lobby staff, or receive EU operating grants. Estimated costs therefore main comparatively low and mainly relate to limited travel, communication, website, and administrative expenses.
