Mission & Goals
The IREFREA network was founded in 1988 with experts from several European countries and it is one of the oldest professional drug networks. The Spanish group has had the scientific leadership of the different research projects since the group’s initiation. The areas covered by IREFREA include alcohol and drug prevention (research, evaluation and programme implementation) covering questions like risk factors, risky behaviours, related violence and programmes efficiency among others. IREFREA members are very active in several professional and scientific arenas, having been invited to collaborate with organizations including EUDA (formerly EMCDDA), EC, NIDA , UNODC and the PNSD (Spanish National Plan on Drugs) and actively participate in networks such as Eurocare, EUSPR, DC&D and The Civil Society Forum on Drugs.
EU Legislative Interests
IREFREA's core activities are closely aligned with and aim to support the implementation of the European Union's Drug Strategy and Drug Action Plan. The organization's mission of advancing the science base of prevention aimed at preventing adolescents drug use at family ana community level to reduce drug demand and its associated risks/harms. The work of the Society supports the Strategy's key objectives and the actions outlined in the Drugs Action Plan designed to promote research on the effectiveness of interventions to create a basis for policies, and the dissemination of results, to impulse high quality drug prevention, assess and collaborate with policy makers at national level (Spanish National Plan on Drugs) informing their strategic and action plan; and at EU level. Since March 2026, IREFREA is responsilble for the coordination of the Spanish Best Practice Portal to increase quality of the drug demand interventions.
Communication Activities
IREFREA is a network of prevention experts that organizes meetings and encounters to share experiences, project findings and transference of knowledge. These meetings enable researchers, practitioners and policymakers from across the EU to share research findings, discuss prevention policy implementation and develop new collaborations with the aim of building capacity within the field and strengthening the links between academic researchers, programme implementers and policymakers. Through the organization websites (www.irefrea.eu; www.irefrea.org; www.ferya.es), social media updates and newsletter IREFREA ensures that these activities are disseminated and sustained throughout the year. IREFREA maintains stable collaboration with the EUDA (formerly EMCDDA), UNODC, the EUSPR, ISSUP, etc. Also has a close collaboration with Universities as the Liverpool John Moores, Oxford Brooks, Charles University in Prague, etc. The Society collaborates also with other European networks within Civil Society Forum on Drugs,
