Mission & Goals
The European IWT Platform serves as the executive body of the European Barge Union (EBU) and the European Skippers Organisation (ESO). Our mission is to promote and strengthen the IWT within the European transport market. We play a key role in EU transport policy development and implementation, ensuring that the sector’s interests are well-represented in governing bodies, working groups, and standard-setting committees. In addition, we develop and implement projects aimed at improving the competitiveness of IWT. Our core areas of focus include: Fleet innovation and greening to facilitate the transition to sustainable operations, Nautical and technical developments to enhance safety and efficiency,Social issues and education to address workforce needs and skills development, Safety and environmental standards, and Infrastructure development to secure resilient and modern inland waterway networks.The Platform’s work is supported by five technical committees a Brussels-based office.

Communication Activities
EUROPEAN IWT Platform WAS APPOINTED AS : - Type C Membership in the Sustainable Transport Forum (STF) (Group of Experts on Alternative Transport Fuels – RegEx: E03321). The appointment is valid starting from the date of the appointment Decision, until 31 December 2027. The membership can be extended by decision of the Director General of DG MOVE. - Type C member to the Digital Transport and Logistics Forum (DTLF). This appointment is valid for five years from 15 June 2024). PARTICIPATES IN - Ad-hoc Meetings with Commission Services i.e. DG MOVE, ENV, CLIMA, GROW, RTD and other relevant bodies and executive agencies at request and by invitation to discuss, provide and request information about specific dossiers and policies and legislative initiatives ín the area of IWT - NAIADES Expert Group Meetings as an observer. CONTRIBUTES TO : - Surveys and stakeholder consultations conducted by relevant Commission services. - Collaboration within the framework of EU-funded projects, where the IWT Platform is actively engaged as a project partner; .- Organisation of Conferences and projects events, etc.

Memberships The European IWT Platform is a member of the following : - European Technology Platform ALICE (Alliance for Logistics Innovation through Collaboration in Europe) - Waterborne Technology Platform V.Z.W. (WATERBORNE TP) - Hydrogen Europe and the Co-Programmed Partnership on Zero-Emission Waterborne Transport (cPP ZEWT) The IWT Platform is partnering in various EU-funding projects : PLATINA4ACTION, ReNEW, PIONEERS. Moreover, the IWT Platform is partnering with key stakeholders like the International River Commissions : CCNR, DC, EICB/SPB, INE, EFIP, ESC, ETF, ESPO, etc.
