Mission & Goals
The European Forum for Animal Welfare Councils provides a platform for debate, for sharing information and views and a network for Animal Welfare advisory bodies throughout Europe. The forum encourages advice relating to animal welfare to be based on scientific knowledge from multi-disciplinary fields. Aims Exchanging views and knowledge relating to animal welfare and ethical issues: - by exchanging views and knowledge to help in the formulation of advice regarding animal welfare and animal ethics by advisory bodies. - by exchanging views informally and in a non-binding way. - by holding discussions and raising issues that might be beyond national comfort zones. - by sharing information about animal welfare priorities and work already carried out. - by serving as a network for participants – also between meetings. - by collaborating with other international bodies such as the European Commission, (EC), the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), the European Food (...)
EU Legislative Interests
EUROFAWC is engaged in EU legislative and policy processes related to animal welfare. Among other initiatives, we are currently following the discussions on the Proposal for a Regulation on the welfare of dogs and cats and their traceability, the Proposal for a Regulation on the protection of animals during transport and related operations, and the upcoming legislative initiative titled On-farm animal welfare for certain animals: modernisation of EU legislation, which forms part of the Farm to Fork Strategy. These proposals fall within the scope of EUROFAWC’s mission to promote improved welfare standards for animals across the European Union.
Communication Activities
In practice the EuroFAWC network meets once a year to present and discuss topics relating to animal welfare and ethical issues. The councils and representatives meeting through EuroFAWC cover between them a large field of expertise, from veterinary medicine, animal welfare science and animal ethics, to legislation, implementation and control.

Member Of
EuroFAWC is member of the EU Animal Welfare Platform. The following persons participate at the meeting of EuroFAWC: the (vice)presidents of national Animal Welfare Councils, the members of the secretariats and other governmental animal welfare experts involved in the Animal Welfare Councils, or in the Animal Welfare Departments of the national or regional governments concerned. The Council of Europe, the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), the European Commission (EC), the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and other relevant bodies are also invited to attend each meeting. see: http://www.eurofawc.com/home/8
