Mission & Goals

The EFN objectives are the following: a) To study and take action on issues relating to the health of the European population and to the nursing profession. b) To provide updated information on the nursing profession in the European Union and the wider Europe and to notify the European institutions and the national nurses associations of that information. c) To present its opinions and recommendations on all matters within its competence to institutions in the European Union and the wider Europe, and to take any actions it deems appropriate to ensure that these are duly considered. d) To communicate and co-operate with other organisations and bodies representing health care professions in Europe. e) To ensure that nurses and nursing are central in the formulation of Social and Health Policy and its implementation in the European Union and in the wider Europe. f) To support and facilitate equal access to high-quality health services in the European Union and in the wider Europe.

EU Legislative Interests

Education (Directive 2005/36/EC - amended by Directive 2013/55/EU); EU Nursing Workforce; Patient Safety & Quality of Care, including eHealth, Digitalisation, Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, Climate change/Planetary Health.

Communication Activities

1/ Publication of five guidelines for European nurses and social workers on how to use eHealth for promoting a healthy lifestyle and prevention, clinical practice, skills development for advanced roles, integrated care and nurse ePrescribing, in the context of the EFN EU funded project ENS4Care. More information at: https://efn.eu/?page_id=7060 2/ Focussing at EU level on Research & Innovation, particularly on the digitalisation of the healthcare sector, the EFN organised on 5 February 2020 a high-level meeting at the European Parliament on digitalisation, with a special focus on the European Electronic Health Records, providing a state of art on two H2020 projects, Smart4Health and InteropEHRate developing formats for European Electronic Health Records in co-creation with the EFN, representing 3 million EU frontline nurses and end-users. Bringing together more than 150 people (most of them non-nurses people), the event was an opportunity to exchange views with MEPs, the European Commission, civil society representatives and industry/SMEs, on the policies and steps to be undertaken to co-design the European Electronic Health Records. A detailed report with the main conclusions of the event is available here: https://bit.ly/2YBLuTC. 3/ Publication of article "Leveraging the trust of nurses to advance a digital agenda in Europe: a critical review of health policy literature". Paul De Raeve, at Al (May 2021). Open Research Europe.
