Mission & Goals

In brief: representing the economic interests of its members, lobbying and advocacy and, of course, sending information to its members. The purpose is to defend production, employment and investments in Europe for its industry and to preserve the entire industrial production chain of the textile and clothing sector in the EU. The objectives of EUROCOTON are a.o.: - to defend and promote the common interests of the European cotton companies; - to define and express the position of the cotton textile industries affiliated to EUROCOTON; - to represent the interests of the cotton industry vis-à-vis the authorities and public institutions; - to represent the interests of the cotton industry within EURATEX and any other organisation the objective of which is related to its members' interests; - to centralise and circulate information likely to be of interest to the member organsiations, particularly that in connection with the EU.

EU Legislative Interests

EUROCOTON follows trade and industry dossiers that could have an impact on the activities of its members. At the moment these are among others: In the field of international trade: the free-trade agreements the EU negotiates and concludes with third countries or a group of countries and their implementation (UKCA, EPA EU-Japan, FTA EU-Vietnam, trade agreement with Mercosur, FTA EU-Indonesia, FTA EU-India, …) and the review of the Generalised Scheme of Preferences. In the field of customs: the implementation of the revised rules of origin in the pan-Euro-Mediterranean area. Furthermore, EUROCOTON is also following the discussions on the Product Environmental Footprint Category Rules for clothing (PEFCR). The relevant services can be DG Trade, DG GROW, DG TAXUD, DG AGRI, DG ENV and the European External Action Service.

Communication Activities

In general: - establishing regular contacts with the EU institutions and more in particular the European Commission and the European Parliament; - drafting position papers; - organising meetings and events with the aim to inform the members and defend and promote their interests; - participation in certain public consultations launched by the European Commission.

EUROCOTON is a member of EURATEX - The European Apparel and Textile Confederation. In the past, EUROCOTON also participated in meetings of: - some sector alliances, like on origin marking; - GAFTT, the "Global Alliance for Fair Textile Trade", Washington (US), however inactive for several years; - BUSINESSEUROPE, only the open sessions of the International Relations Committee, Belgium; - ITMF "International Textile Manufacturers Federation", Switzerland.
