Mission & Goals

EASAC brings together the National Academies of Science of the EU Member States, Norway, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the Academia Europaea (a pan-European Academy) to provide independent science advice to European policymakers. EASAC is the voice of independent science advice in the European Union, mobilising Europe's leading scientists to guide EU policy for the benefit of society. EASAC’s main mission is to inform both national and European Union policymakers on evidence to take policy decisions – on questions of relevance regarding environment, energy, biosciences and public health. EASAC’s views are independent of commercial or political bias, and follow open and transparent processes to arrive at science-based analysis and recommendations.

EU Legislative Interests

EASAC works in three broad programmes: 1) Environment, 2) Energy, and 3) Biosciences and Public Health. It provides relevant in-depth information for upcoming topics of the EU institutions within and across these programmes.

Communication Activities

EASAC typically publishes 3-5 outputs (in-depth reports, statements, commentaries) per year in the above mentioned programmes which are then usually launched in Brussels and through a variety of media channels. Wider stakeholders are typically engaged at launch events, and where practicable throughout the lifetime of any project. EASAC member academies hold similar events in their own respective member states.

Member Of

The InterAcademy Partnership (IAP) http://www.interacademies.org: IAP is the global network of science, engineering & medical academies working together to provide independent expert advice on scientific, technological & health issues. Under InterAcademy Partnership, more than 140 national and regional member academies work together. IAP has four regional networks (EASAC, NASAC, IANAS, AASSA). EASAC is the regional network for Europe. IAP works closely with its member academies to strengthen the role that science plays in society and to advise public officials on the scientific aspects of critical global issues; helps establish science academies in countries where academies do not exist and assists young and small academies to become more prominent in their own countries; sponsors programmes for young scientists designed to help them build strong foundations for successful careers and to more effectively engage decision makers.
