Mission & Goals

Europa Nostra is the European voice of civil society committed to safeguarding and promoting cultural and natural heritage. Founded in 1963, it is a pan-European federation of heritage NGOs, supported by a wide network of public bodies, private companies and individuals, covering over 40 countries. Recognised as the largest and the most representative heritage network in Europe, Europa Nostra maintains close relations with the EU, the Council of Europe, UNESCO and other international bodies. We campaign to save Europe’s endangered monuments, sites and landscapes. We celebrate excellence through the European Heritage Awards / Europa Nostra Awards. We contribute to the definition and implementation of European strategies and policies related to heritage. Europa Nostra is an official partner of the New European Bauhaus initiative and a leading European member and supporter of the Climate Heritage Network. Europa Nostra has led the consortium of the European Heritage Hub since 2023.

Communication Activities

Europa Nostra acts as a relay between civil society and EU institutions, carrying out the crucial tasks of raising-awareness on the value of cultural heritage for Europe, advocating the mainstreaming of heritage into EU policies and securing adequate funding, as well as actively contributing to the EU policy debate and policy-making process. Since 2014, Europa Nostra is among the selected European networks active in the field of the cultural and creative sectors co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Commission. We are currently running the project "“Europa Nostra Heritage Agora" since 1 January 2025 and until 31 December 2028. Europa Nostra runs the European Heritage Awards/Europa Nostra Awards scheme since its launch in 2002 by the European Commission. The Awards promote best practices related to heritage conservation, management, research, education and communication. In this way, the Awards scheme contributes to a stronger public recognition of cultural heritage as a strategic resource for Europe’s society and economy. Europa Nostra also manages The 7 Most Endangered programme which was launched in January 2013 by Europa Nostra with the European Investment Bank Institute as founding partner and the Council of Europe Development Bank as associated partner. The 7 Most Endangered programme identifies endangered monuments and sites in Europe and mobilizes public and private partners on a local, national and European level to find a viable future for those sites. Europa Nostra organises and contributes to many meetings, forums, capacity building and networking events related to cultural heritage. We also organise an annual European Cultural Heritage Summit gathering hundreds of heritage professionals and volunteers from Europe and beyond. Europa Nostra coordinates and provides the secretariat for the European Heritage Alliance 3.3, an informal platform of circa 50 European and International networks active in the wider field of cultural heritage. Europa Nostra leads the European consortium of 28 partners implementing the Preparatory Action to establish the European Heritage Hub. This ambitious initiative gathers diverse expertise and pools resources to mobilise and strengthen the cultural heritage-driven movement in Europe. Funded by the European Union, the project was initially launched as a pilot in May 2023 and has been operating as a Preparatory Action since September 2025. Europa Nostra is also an official partner of the New European Bauhaus initiative developed by the European Commission, and is a leading European member and supporter of the Climate Heritage Network. Europa Nostra has also partnerships with various organisations regarding Awards scheme related to the wider field of cultural heritage: https://heritageinmotion.eu/, Helena Vaz da Silva European Award, Destination of Sustainable Cultural Tourism Awards, Costa Carras European Citizens Awards for the Safeguard of Endangered Heritage.
