Mission & Goals

The EC ERIC Regulation No 723/2009 on the Community legal Framework for a European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC) provides a legal instrument for facilitating the establishment and operation of European research infrastructures. Its implementation gives rise to a number of common specific policy, regulatory and administrative questions at European and national level. In 2017 the existing ERICs (now 31) formed the ERIC Forum in order to further strengthen the coordination among ERICs and interact effectively with the EC to achieve the full implementation of the ERIC regulation. The ERIC Forum’s aim is to advance operations of ERICs and to strategically contribute to the development of ERIC related policies, identify common challenges, collectively develop responses to these challenges, contribute to the further development of the ERIC Regulation, ESFRI framework and European and international research context, and foster the visibility, impact and sustainability of ERICs.

EU Legislative Interests

The ERIC Forum supports the analysis and implementation of the ERIC Regulation and promotes awareness and understanding of the ERIC legal framework at national level. Research Infrastructures, including European Research Infrastructure Consortia (ERICs), contribute to the European Research Area (ERA) by supporting the development and implementation of ERA policies and initiatives. The ERIC Forum facilitates coordination among ERICs and represents their collective interests in relevant policy discussions. The Chair of the ERIC Forum currently represents Research Infrastructures in the ERA Forum. The ERIC Forum contributes to European Commission consultations relevant to ERICs and Research Infrastructures such as the European Research Area Act, and it also participates in ERA policy actions, including the ERA Action on Artificial Intelligence in Science. The ERIC Forum also provides input relevant to the development of the European Commission Framework Programmes, as ERICs are potential beneficiaries of these funding programmes.

Communication Activities

The ERIC Forum communicates information on its activities and those of its ERIC members to relevant stakeholders at European and international level. In this context, it organises and participates in events, including the ERIC Forum Annual Meeting (12–13 November 2025, Brussels). The ERIC Forum website provides access to position papers and policy briefs developed within the European Commission H2020 ERIC Forum project. These outputs are disseminated through communication channels, including social media platforms (X and LinkedIn). The ERIC Forum also participates in international conferences and stakeholder events relevant to Research Infrastructures and ERIC-related policy developments.

Additional Information

The Second Implementation Project for the ERIC Forum is born to further structure the cooperation between the ERICs and to support the implementation of the ERICs’ policy, shaping their community identity and consolidating their integration within the European Research Area (ERA). It officially started on the 1st of September, 2023, thanks to funds from the Horizon Europe Action. Over the next four years, specific working groups will meet to identify shared practices in managing back-office resources, employment contracts, VAT exemptions, or rules for multi-sited or distributed ERICs. The Project will comply with the European Commission’s open science obligations set out by Horizon Europe and ensure an appropriate sex and gender balance.
