Mission & Goals

EMES is a research network of established university research centres and individual researchers whose goal has been so far to gradually build up an international corpus of theoretical and empirical knowledge, pluralistic in disciplines and methodologies, around our “SE” concepts: social enterprise, social entrepreneurship, social economy, solidarity economy and social innovation.

Communication Activities

EMES conducts multidisciplinary studies to understand the diversity of experiences at national levels, and the way social enterprises and third sector organisations contribute and relate to social innovation across societies with an emphasis on how the participation of communities enhances such processes. They have covered issues as varied as health and personal services, work integration, migration, the ecosocial transition, culture and the arts, etc. EMES currently participates in two Horizon projects: EMCCINNO (https://www.emccinno.eu/) and WISESHIFT (https://www.wiseshiftproject.eu/). Before then, the project entitled “Social enterprises and their ecosystems in Europe” covered all Member States plus seven neighbouring countries for a total of 35 countries in Europe. This mapping update improved the quality of the evidence presented in 21 country reports produced in 2014 by accuracy and completeness of data and to provide further background information based on on-going and recently published research findings and illustrative examples, which have made new critical perspectives, data and information available (see: https://emes.net/research-projects/social-enterprise/eu-mapping-mapping-study-on-social-enterprise-ecosystems-update-part-2). The range of initiatives carried out by the Coordination Unit and the members of EMES covers comparative research projects, educational and training programs in dozens of universities and dissemination activities. EMES organizes bi-annual international conferences and international PhD Summer Schools that have become references in the research community. In 2026, we will hold our 10th Training School co-organised by ULg and UCL. The Coordination Unit of EMES has specialized over the years in innovative forms of research dissemination and stakeholder engagement with an eye on maximizing the uptake of research findings and project concrete outputs. Indeed, EMES disseminates the results of its research projects and publications in various economic, social and political arenas and in the academic world.
