Mission & Goals
EMERGENCY provides free, high-quality healthcare to victims of war, poverty and landmines, alongside building hospitals and training local medical staff. Founded in 1994, EMERGENCY has treated over 13 million people in 18 different countries and currently operates in Afghanistan, Eritrea, Iraq, Italy, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Ukraine and Uganda. EMERGENCY offers high-quality medical and surgical care; guarantees treatment to anyone in need of assistance, with no discrimination on the basis of political, ideological or religious beliefs; trains local staff thoroughly, with the intent of handing over all facilities to the local health authorities as soon as self-sustainability can be achieved. EMERGENCY also promotes a culture of peace, solidarity and respect for human rights. EMERGENCY's work around the world is made possible thanks to the help of thousands of volunteers and supporters.
EU Legislative Interests
The aim of EMERGENCY’s work in Brussels is to influence/collaborate with EU decision-makers and officials to ensure that EU policies affecting least developed countries have positive impact on the lives of those most in need. EMERGENCY’s work includes various policy areas: health, development and migration policy, humanitarian aid, health in least development countries.
Communication Activities
EMERGENCY’s representatives attend conferences, public hearings, committees, events in Italy, Europe and around the world. The most important activities in 2025 were: Online and in person meetings with staff of the European Commission, with a focus on INTPA, ECHO, JUST, MENA and HOME and Members of the European Parliament; Meetings with WHO and UN high level representatives; Periodical meetings with IOM, OHCHR and UNCHR on Central Mediterranean situation; Participation with a delegation to the 78th World Health Assembly in Geneva; Participation with a delegation to the World Health Summit in Berlin; Participation with a delegation to the UK-Africa Health Summit in London; Production and dissemination of the Briefing paper “Cardiac Surgery in Wartimes” on Sudan; Production and dissemination of the report “Access to Emergency, Critical and Operative Care in Afghanistan”; Participation to the Health Strategic Thematic Working Group on Afghanistan in Doha; Participation to the pre-Senior Officials Meeting on Afghanistan in Doha; Hearing before the Foreign Affairs and Defence Committees of the Italian Chamber of Deputies on the International Military Missions Decree; Production and dissemination of the report “An Inhumane Border” on search and rescue activities in the Central Mediterranean; Participation as a speaker in a Webinar organized by the Centre of Competence on Humanitarian Negotiations on search and rescue activities at sea; Organization and participation to the event for the 10 years anniversary of search and rescue activities held at the European Parliament in Brussels; Organization and participation to the press conference for the 10 years anniversary of search and rescue activities held at the Italian Senate in Rome; Hearing before the Health Committee of the Lombardy Regional Council on the draft law regarding regional provisions against health poverty.
