Mission & Goals

EFHR works to promote human rights, the rule of law, and democracy in Egypt, recognizing that these are key to ensuring justice, freedom, and human rights for all Egyptians. EFHR seeks to achieve this through international advocacy with bodies like the UN and EU to ensure adherence to human rights standards, as well as research, monitoring, and documentation of violations to raise awareness and promote accountability. Through these efforts, EFHR aims to amplify the voices of independent local civil society activists and human rights defenders, thereby protecting public space in Egypt and fostering a safe environment where fundamental freedoms are respected.

EU Legislative Interests

EU External Relations with Egypt: Our work focuses on advocacy to influence EU policies and decisions on human rights, the rule of law, and democracy in Egypt. While monitoring EU legislative developments serves as a supporting role, our primary efforts are dedicated to advocacy. The European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP) serves as a key framework for these activities. Activities with the European Parliament: - Holding advocacy meetings with MEPs, their staff, and political advisers to highlight the human rights situation in Egypt and present specific policy recommendations. - Drafting and submitting briefings and reports on relevant topics to inform EP activities, resolutions, and other legislative initiatives. - Participating in advocacy events, such as briefings or press conferences, to amplify human rights concerns in Egypt. - Sending documentation to the EP Subcommittee on Human Rights (DROI) to contribute to urgency resolutions relevant to EFHR's work. - Participating in advocacy events within the EP, such as press conferences and briefings. Activities with the European Commission and EEAS: - Advocacy with EC and EEAS officials ahead of EU-Egypt Association Council meetings and other bilateral processes to ensure that human rights, democracy, and the rule of law are prioritized within the ENP framework and broader EU external relations with Egypt. - Participating in joint meetings with other human rights NGOs and Commissioner cabinet advisers at the EC. - Advocacy regarding the human rights, rule of law, and democracy components of the new Pact for the Mediterranean.
