Mission & Goals
The European Geosciences Union (EGU) is Europe’s leading organisation for research in Earth, planetary, and space sciences. It promotes both fundamental geoscience research and applied studies that address key societal and environmental challenges. EGU publishes a range of high-quality scientific journals using an innovative open-access format, ensuring that research is freely accessible to the global community (https://www.egu.eu/publications/open-access-journals/). The Union also recognises scientific excellence through a variety of awards and medals. The annual EGU General Assembly is Europe’s largest and most influential geoscience gathering, welcoming a total of 20,984 participants from 104 countries in 2025 (https://www.egu25.eu/). Beyond research, EGU supports science communication and outreach, offering grants, initiatives that enable members and science journalists to engage the public and policymakers, enhancing the visibility and societal impact of geoscience knowledge.
EU Legislative Interests
The EGU has held a number of science-policy events involving both scientists and policymakers. Following each event, a document highlighting the issues and outcomes of the event was published and shared widely. The EGU has also made statements about the importance of science research funding. While the EGU has not been directly involved with specific EU legislative proposals or policies, these documents, statements or events may have indirectly influenced those working on them. The policy-related topics that the EGU has engaged with indirectly as a result of these activities include: - Horizon Europe - The European Missions - The European Green Deal - Research funding - Open Access publishing More information and links to these activities are listed in the section below.
