Mission & Goals
EarthCheck is one of the world’s leading scientific benchmarking, certification, and advisory groups for sustainable travel and tourism. Since 1987, we have helped businesses, communities, and governments deliver sustainable, clean, and prosperous destinations where people can visit, live, work, and play. We understand the importance of big ideas and clear communication, showing that what’s good for business can also be good for the planet. Through certification, consulting, training, and software solutions, we help tourism businesses become more sustainable. Our globally trusted certification programs enable consumers to make informed decisions. When a business displays the EarthCheck badge, it means they’ve undergone a rigorous, science-based sustainability process, giving them tools to measure impact and make decisions that save money, resources, and the planet.
EU Legislative Interests
EarthCheck is a global leader in science-based sustainability certification, ESG advisory, and climate planning for the tourism sector. Operating in over 70 countries, we help destinations, businesses, and governments transition to low-carbon, resource-efficient, and socially responsible models. Our work aligns with key EU legislative frameworks. We support the Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition Directive (Directive 2024/825), applying from September 2026, which restricts generic environmental claims and offset-based "climate neutral" product claims. EarthCheck's third-party-verified certification helps businesses substantiate environmental claims with credible evidence. We align with the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), as amended by the Omnibus I Directive (EU 2026/470), providing structured ESG benchmarking and reporting tools for companies within and outside mandatory reporting scope. Our ESG data and performance metrics also support the goals of the EU Taxonomy Regulation and the Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation (SFDR), enabling sustainable investment decisions across tourism and hospitality portfolios. EarthCheck supports the EU Nature Restoration Regulation (EU 2024/1991), which entered into force in August 2024, through biodiversity assessment, regenerative tourism strategies, and land-use planning. We follow the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) and the phased rollout of the EU Digital Product Passport, advocating for interoperable sustainability data systems in tourism. In response to the European Climate Law and Energy Efficiency Directive, we support decarbonisation strategies including Net Zero Roadmaps, climate risk scenario planning, and Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions tracking. We follow the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), as amended by Omnibus I, supporting businesses to manage environmental and human rights risks in tourism supply chains. Our alignment with the Waste Framework Directive includes waste benchmarking and circular economy training. We also monitor the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) and the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) for their supply chain implications in hospitality. EarthCheck provides technical support, strategic advisory, and capacity building across ESG, biodiversity, and climate resilience, including Destination Sustainability Action Plans, accredited training, and sustainable event delivery through our SEMS program. Our work directly supports the EU Green Deal, the Circular Economy Action Plan, and the Fit for 55 package.
Communication Activities
Tourism and the road to net zero: Why destinations must act now. The tourism sector stands at a crossroads. Across the globe, rising temperatures, extreme weather and biodiversity loss are disrupting the very landscapes and experiences that attract travellers in the first place. At the same time, tourism itself contributes significantly to global greenhouse gas emissions. This tension sits at the heart of tourism’s most urgent challenge – how to decarbonise while continuing to thrive. https://earthcheck.org/research/tourism-and-the-road-to-net-zero/ Regenerative Tourism in Practice: https://earthcheck.org/research/regenerative-tourism-research-paper/ The ABCs of ESG: Why ESG reporting matters: A discussion paper published by the EarthCheck Research Institute explores the changing ESG landscape, and details what ESG reporting can do for companies and their corporate reputation. https://earthcheck.org/research/why-esg-reporting-matters/ EarthCheck welcomes the EU Green Claims Directive: https://earthcheck.org/news/earthcheck-welcomes-eu-green-claims-directive/
