Mission & Goals
The mission statement of DTI is "Empower people by building a vibrant ecosystem for simple and secure data transfers." We build open-source direct data transfer tools that enable individual users of digital services to migrate personal data, at their sole direction, from one service to another. We also engage on public policy worldwide as it relates to data portability. Both our product and policy work are designed to support our mission. We work in collaboration with partner organizations, including platforms who host personal data, and with nonprofit entities and governments.
EU Legislative Interests
We currently work on the Digital Markets Act and the General Data Protection Regulation. Portions of our work may also relate to the Data Act and future regulations regarding Artificial Intelligence.
Communication Activities
We hosted an event on June 25, 2025 in Brussels related to our work on portability implementation, which itself relates in part to the above EU legislative frameworks. More information is available on our website: https://dtinit.org/our-work#events We have no other public events or campaigns related to the above EU policies, however they are regularly referenced in our blog, https://dtinit.org/blog/ (also available as an email newsletter through our website, https://dtinit.org/#mc_embed_signup).

Organisation Members
While DTI is not a membership-driven organization under US tax law, we are structured to have members who contribute to our revenue and governance. Our organization is not a member-driven organization in that we are legally bound to serve our nonprofit mission. Our members are currently Google, Apple, and Meta. Additionally, Amazon and ErnieApp are partners, a status similar to membership. We do not promote their interests, solely the interests of our organization and its mission.
Additional Information
We were incorporated in mid-2022 and began operations in January 2023. We closed the books on our first operational year, calendar year 2023, in late Q1 2024. In 2024, we expanded our costs to include external support. We closed the books on calendar year 2024 in early 2025, and anticipate closing the books on calendar year 2025 in early 2026.
