Mission & Goals
The COSMOS ORGANIC and COSMOS NATURAL signatures are a consumer guarantee, enabling them to choose organic and natural cosmetic products they can trust. The COSMOS-standard defines the criteria that companies must meet to guarantee consumers that their products are genuine organic or natural cosmetics manufactured according to the highest possible sustainability practices. COSMOS actively works to prevent greenwashing by ensuring transparency and integrity in product claims, reinforcing trust in certified products. COSMOS is the most widely used organic and natural cosmetic standard in the world. It was created in 2009 by five European associations: BDIH (Germany), Ecocert and Cosmebio (France), ICEA (Italy) and SOIL ASSOCIATION (UK).
EU Legislative Interests
1. Cosmetics Regulation (EC) N° 1223/2009 2. Chemical Strategy for Sustainability 3. Waste Framework Directive (2008/98/EC) and Circular Economy Initiatives 4. Endocrine Disruptors Initiative 5. Biodiversity Strategy 2030 6. Green Claims Initiative 7. REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 In summary, COSMOS-standard AISBL is part of a dynamic that supports European policies focused on sustainability, consumer safety and responsible innovation in the cosmetics sector. These initiatives promote close alignment between the objectives of the standard and EU priorities.
Communication Activities
COSMOS-standard AISBL has traditionally been discreet about its commitments, allowing its member certification bodies and associations to communicate on its behalf. However, as COSMOS has become the most widely used standard worldwide—a true European success story—the organisation now aims to communicate more directly and broadly through: • Its own platforms: Including its website, blog, and social networks, to engage both consumers and professionals. • Public relations initiatives: Disseminating press releases on the alignment of the standard with European initiatives and participating in speaking engagements. • Collaborations: Building partnerships with NGOs, academic institutions, and industry organisations to amplify the impact of campaigns. In addition, COSMOS will continue its established practices such as: • Conducting awareness campaigns. • Publishing position papers. • Actively participating in conferences.
