Mission & Goals
Contrails.org is a non-profit applied research organization dedicated to reducing aviation's climate impact through contrail management. Launched in 2025 as part of the Breakthrough Energy platform, it brings together leading scientists, technologists, and industry experts to accelerate the research, technology, and operational improvements needed to make contrail management practical. Our work spans three areas: Science (strategic research to model, observe, and measure contrails); Technology (open models, tools, and protocols for wider deployment); and Implementation (real world trials and resolving system level hurdles to scale). We envision a world where intelligent route planning eliminates climate warming contrails at near zero cost.
EU Legislative Interests
We supply science-based information and operational insights relevant to the following laws: EU ETS Directive 2003/87/EC, including the 2026 revision. Single European Sky framework and Performance and Charging Scheme (IR 2019/317). EU Innovation Fund (non-CO2 mitigation strand).
Communication Activities
Contrails.org's communication activities supporting the EU policies above include: - 21 peer reviewed publications on contrail science, forecasting, measurement and operational avoidance, in journals including Nature Communications, Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics, and Geoscientific Model Development. - Open source tools and models, including pycontrails (the contrail modelling framework), the Contrails API, Map and Navigator, used by researchers, airlines, ANSPs and regulators. - Policy concept notes on navigational contrail avoidance. - Technical workshops, briefings and conference presentations for research, industry and policy audiences. - Public reporting of results from real world contrail avoidance trials with airlines and ANSPs.
