Mission & Goals
Bestack is the national research and promotion consortium among the leading Italian companies that produce corrugated cardboard packaging for fruit and vegetables present nationwide that together account for 90% of Italian production. We carry out research, certification, and innovation for corrugated cardboard packaging. Cardboard is the most widely used packaging material for fruit and vegetables and Bestack is the most widespread dimensional logistics standard. More than 84% of corrugated cardboard packaging produced in Italy respects these dimensions. The same standard is also used today in Europe with the CF brand of Fefco and PQY of LIDL. With the University of Bologna we have developed the patent of ATTIVO! packaging to improve the shelf life of Italian fruit and vegetables contained, make it good for longer and allow them to be more competitive abroad, including in more distant markets. EU Legislative Interests
In 2008, the Bestack Consortium promoted the creation of the scientific dossier to support the national implementation of EC Regulation no. 1234/2007 of 22 October 2007 (single CMO regulation). The Consortium made its skills available to the Italian Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies as a contribution to the definition of the National Strategy 2009-2013 (fruit and vegetable sector). In particular, the Consortium has studied and implemented the voluntary Bestack Quality Approved (BQA) certification system, a system aimed at identifying special packaging for dimensional, performance and respect for the environment. This system, in experimentation since 2007, was already bringing numerous benefits in logistical and economic terms to the supply chain and, thanks to the European Community, it was able to expand its diffusion at national level so as to be adopted at European level by FEFCO (with the CFQ standard ) and by LIDL (with the PQY standard) of which Bestack is an auditor at national level. The BQA certification system with the Ministerial Circular n. 6152 of 12/24/2008 has acquired further value, becoming one of the eligible measures provided for by the fruit and vegetable CMO.
Communication Activities
We raise awareness in the fruit and vegetable supply chain to improve the sustainability of processes and final products We promote and implement innovation in food packaging to make it more sustainable, reduce the use of non-renewable raw materials, use only certified raw materials from renewable sources. we are also concerned with reducing food waste through the use of reduced and intelligent packaging to maximize sustainability. This is why we organize conferences, make ADV and participate in sector fairs as well as having constant relations with Italian politics
