Mission & Goals
The Confederation of European Data Protection Organisations, founded in September 2011, is an European umbrella organisation bringing together national data protection organisations from all over the European Union. It was founded with the aim of being a interlocutor to European policy-makers and Data Protection Authorities in the context of the discussion, adoption and implementation of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). It successfully became a proactive force, bringing forwards concrete proposals that played a part in the shaping of the current legislation, in particular with regards to the definition of the position and role of the Data Protection Officer. EU Legislative Interests
CEDPO is keenly focused on all aspects of digital regulation, with a special emphasis on data protection. It has actively engaged in discussions and negotiations surrounding the General Data Protection Regulation since 2011 and continues to dedicate efforts to this critical area.
Communication Activities
CEDPO was founded with the aim of being an interlocutor to European policy-makers and Data Protection Authorities in the context of the discussion, adoption, and implementation of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). It successfully became a proactive force, bringing forward concrete proposals that played a part in shaping the current legislation, particularly regarding the definition of the position and role of the Data Protection Officer (DPO). CEDPO regularly releases position papers and statements on data protection and digital matters. These contributions contain precise, balanced, and practicable provisions, informed by the rich and diverse experiences of CEDPO’s member associations, which possess hands-on knowledge of the challenges surrounding the role and position of the DPO, as well as the daily issues they face. CEDPO’s contribution to European data protection did not stop with the adoption of the GDPR in 2016. It has published a detailed analysis of the right to access in European countries and the new European regulation and continues to bring the DPO’s perspective into ongoing debates, for instance, by participating in the “Fab Labs” organized by the Article 29 Working Party. CEDPO also took part in the modernization of the Council of Europe’s Convention 108 (“Convention for the Protection of Individuals with Regard to Automatic Processing of Personal Data”), advocating for better recognition of the crucial role that DPOs play in data protection today. Since October 2024, CEDPO has also been organizing an annual conference, inviting representatives from EU institutions to participate as panelists. This event serves as a platform for high-level discussions on the evolving challenges of data protection, fostering dialogue between policymakers, data protection professionals, and industry stakeholders. All of the organization’s contributions to legislative and practical aspects of data protection can be found on its website (http://www.cedpo.eu/publications).
