Mission & Goals
HRNK is a non-partisan, non-profit organization that was founded in 2001 to promote human rights in North Korea. Our goals include the closure of North Korea's prison camps, opening of the country's borders, and improvements in access to information, food, and quality of life for all North Korean citizens. We work towards these goals through collaboration with scholars, North Korean escapees, satellite imagery experts, and other leaders to publish original research, hold events, and share our findings with universities, the general public, U.S. government, EU, and UN. Our research and publication activities focus on how the North Korean totalitarian regime abuses the rights of its citizens, its vast system of political prisons and labor camps, the regime’s denial of equal access to food and goods, and the plight of refugees fleeing to China.
EU Legislative Interests
HRNK seeks to support the EU to uphold its strong human rights standards in regard to proposals, policies, European Parliament own-initiative reports, and resolutions pertaining to North Korea, human rights, and the Korean Peninsula, including by establishing contacts with the European External Action Service and the European Parliament’s Subcommittee on Human Rights and Delegation for Relations with the Korean Peninsula.
Communication Activities
HRNK has released over 70 major publications on North Korean human rights issues, based on independent research and testimony of North Korean escapees. HRNK also works to inform the general public by organizing (online) events, holding report launches, releasing information on its website and social media outlets, and providing interviews to news organizations. HRNK has held international conferences on North Korean human rights issues, worked with North Korean escapees in the U.S., South Korea, and at the UN, and provided expertise through testimony to the U.S. Congress on multiple occasions.
