Mission & Goals
Civil Rights Defenders (CRD) aims to protect human rights, strengthen democracy, and uphold the rule of law globally. We support human rights defenders facing risks, provide capacity-building for civil society organisations, engage in advocacy, monitors and reports on human rights violations, and promote accountability and transparency from governments and institutions. We focus particularly on defending rule of law, freedom of expression, anti-discrimination, minority rights, and ensuring a safe space for activism and civic engagement.

Communication Activities
CRD actively engages with EU institutions through various advocacy efforts, policy dialogues, and strategic consultations aimed at advancing human rights, democracy, and the rule of law in the EU and beyond. These engagements involve direct meetings with key policymakers, participation in consultations on relevant legislative proposals, and collaboration with other civil society organizations to ensure that human rights are central to EU policy-making processes. We regularly organize high-profile events, including international conferences, public debates, and expert roundtables, which bring together policymakers, human rights defenders, legal experts, and civil society actors. These platforms foster discussions on key EU policies and their implementation, with a particular focus on issues such as anti-discrimination, the protection of human rights defenders, and freedom of expression. In addition, we run targeted online campaigns to raise awareness about urgent human rights violations and to mobilize public support for legislative changes. These campaigns often align with key EU priorities, such as promoting LGBTI+ rights, safeguarding civil society space, and ensuring the protection of victims' rights. CRD also plays an instrumental role in producing high-quality research and policy papers, including in-depth country reports, context analyses, and position papers. These publications provide a comprehensive understanding of human rights challenges in various regions and offer concrete recommendations for EU policymakers. Our communication efforts also include issuing press releases and public statements to influence EU legislation and policies, particularly those relating to anti-discrimination, rule of law, and freedom of expression. Through these efforts, CRD ensures that EU decision-makers are well-informed and held accountable in their commitment to human rights protection.
