Mission & Goals

CIRAD is a French agricultural research and international cooperation organization working for the sustainable development of tropical and Mediterranean regions.

EU Legislative Interests

Main European policy areas that are followed by our organisation: - Research and Innovation - International cooperation - Agricultural policy - Regional policy - External relations More specifically, CIRAD experts are also following the developments under the following themes: food security, imported deforestation, pesticides, biodoversity, etc.

Communication Activities

As a leading European agricultural research for development player, CIRAD is committed to more sustainable agricultural and food systems that are resilient to global change, including climate change, while preserving biodiversity and natural resources. CIRAD is involved in communication activities relating to EU Research and innovation, as well as in international cooperation. As far as R&I is concerned, CIRAD participates in the AU-EU High Level Policy Dialogue on Science, Technology and Innovation and events that are associated with the HLPD. CIRAD also plays an active part in events relating to the "green" dimension of EU external policy. In particular, CIRAD has organised several InfoPoint events in relation to its priority areas of research.

Member Of

CIRAD is an active member of Agrinatura network bringing together the major research organisations in Europe, committed with agricultural research and education for research and development. CIRAD is also a member of EURAGRI, the non-for-profit platform for leading European public research and innovation related organizations working in the agriculture, food, forestry and marine sectors. It is involved in the European Research Area Agricultural Research for Development (ARD) network, which funds projects on food safety, capacity building in the South, food supplies and energy.

Organisation Members

CIRAD is a public establishment under the joint authority of the French ministries in charge of research and of foreign affairs. As such, it does not have “member entities” in the traditional sense of a network-based organisation. However, CIRAD maintains a wide network of scientific partnerships and collaborations with institutions in over 100 countries. In terms of formal affiliations, CIRAD is a member of the following networks and associations: Agrinatura – a European alliance of universities and research organizations dedicated to agricultural research and higher education for development. CIRAD also collaborates closely with other entities, such as CGIAR research centers, national agricultural research systems (NARS), and regional organizations in Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia.

Additional Information

Over the budget year 2024, CIRAD has received contributions from the European Commission under different programmes relating to its core areas of work: through H2020/Horizon Europe for research and innovation activities, under the EU external instruments and under the regional policy (for its structures located in the EU outermost regions)
