Mission & Goals
CarobWay is an agri-food tech company dedicated to re-establishing carob as a primary, climate-resilient crop within the EU. Our mission aligns with the EU Green Deal and Farm to Fork Strategy by integrating sustainable agriculture with high-value manufacturing. Key Objectives: Climate Resilience: Scaling cultivation of drought-tolerant carob to revitalize rural areas and marginal lands, supporting EU food security and adaptation goals. Sustainable Manufacturing: Establishing advanced production in Germany and Portugal to process carob into health-focused ingredients, ensuring local value addition. Environmental Impact: Engaging in EU programs for soil preservation, carbon sequestration, and biodiversity. Rural Development: Creating economic opportunities in rural regions through vertical integration, from sustainable farming to innovative food technology.
EU Legislative Interests
1. Soil Health and Environmental Sustainability Soil Monitoring Law (Directive (EU) 2024/1615 & 2025/2358): CarobWay specifically targets the implementation of soil health indicators and monitoring frameworks. Our focus is on how carob cultivation prevents desertification and improves soil organic carbon (SOC) in the Mediterranean (Portugal) and semi-arid regions. We monitor the 2026 National Restoration Plans to ensure drought-resistant perennial crops are integrated into soil recovery strategies. EU Nature Restoration Law: We track the targets for agricultural ecosystem restoration. CarobWay promotes the use of carob trees as a tool for biodiversity corridors and the restoration of degraded lands, aligning with the 2030 biodiversity targets. The EU Forest Strategy for 2030: Following the sustainable management of "forest-like" agricultural systems (agroforestry) and their role in local ecosystem services. 2. Climate Action and Carbon Farming Carbon Removal Certification Framework (CRCF): We are actively following the development of the 2026 Carbon Farming Methodologies. CarobWay aims to provide data on the carbon sequestration potential of carob orchards to help standardize credits for farmers, turning sustainable land management into a viable business model. EU Climate Adaptation Strategy: Monitoring policies that support "climate-proof" agriculture. CarobWay acts as a case study for shifting from water-intensive crops to low-input, drought-tolerant alternatives in Southern Europe. 3. Agriculture and Rural Development Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) Strategic Plans (2023-2027 & Post-2027 Framework): We target the Eco-schemes and Pillar II Rural Development funds in Germany and Portugal. Our goal is to advocate for the inclusion of carob in national Strategic Plans as a priority crop for climate adaptation and rural economic diversification. The "Vision for Agriculture and Food" (2026 Commission Initiative): We monitor the transition toward a more competitive and resilient food system, advocating for the role of forgotten or "underutilized" crops in strengthening the EU's internal food security. Long-term Vision for Rural Areas: Tracking initiatives that support rural innovation hubs and "Smart Villages," particularly regarding the establishment of manufacturing units in rural Portugal and Germany. 4. Food, Health, and Bioeconomy Sustainable Food Systems (SFS) Framework: Monitoring the legislative progress on sustainability labeling and nutrient profiles. CarobWay’s health products (natural sweeteners, fibers, and proteins) are positioned as sustainable alternatives to ultra-processed ingredients. EU Bioeconomy Strategy: Focusing on the "Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking" (CBE JU). We target policies that support the scale-up of bio-refineries and manufacturing plants that transform agricultural side-streams into high-value health products. Farm to Fork Strategy: Specifically following targets for the reduction of chemical pesticides and fertilizers, where carob's naturally low-input requirements serve as a benchmark for sustainable production. 5. Regional and Industrial Policy Cohesion Policy 2021-2027: Monitoring European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) allocations for industrial innovation in Germany (Brandenburg/Eastern regions) and Portugal (Alentejo/Algarve) to support the construction of processing facilities.
