Today, the association unites over 850 professional artists-performers, covering all musical styles. The Bulgarian Music Association (BMA) represents and protects the interests of professional music performers in Bulgaria. We provide our members with a representative structure that unites them and expresses their position nationally and internationally. Our mission is to promote their professional development by offering information, new qualification opportunities and platforms for the exchange of experience in Bulgaria and beyond. BMA works in several directions: Advocacy International activity Information provision Training and education Promotion of Bulgarian music The BMA is here to provide what musicians cannot achieve on their own.

Communication Activities

Communication activities (events, campaigns, publications, etc.) related to the EU policies above: The Bulgarian Music Association (BMA) systematically links its work to key EU cultural and digital policies through advocacy, public events, expert participation and targeted communication to musicians and stakeholders. Regarding the Digital Services Act (DSA) and Digital Markets Act (DMA), BMA integrates issues such as platform accountability, data transparency and fair remuneration for online uses of music into its advocacy dialogues, round tables and sector meetings on digital distribution and authors’ rights. Under the Creative Europe programme, BMA regularly disseminates information on open calls to its members and wider audiences, and uses the completed Creative Europe project “MOST – the complex strategy to develop the Balkan World Music scene” as a communication tool in presentations at international trade fairs and in materials promoting Bulgarian music export. In relation to EU copyright rules and the Directive (EU) 2019/790 – DSM Directive, BMA cooperates with Musicautor and PROPHON, participates in expert round tables (e.g. on private copying) and issues public positions calling for fair compensation and effective implementation of EU norms in Bulgarian legislation, explaining their impact on musicians’ income. Concerning the EU’s Audiovisual Media Services Directive, BMA communicates on topics such as visibility of Bulgarian and European works and fair remuneration of public service ensembles through formal statements to national institutions and participation in public debates on media and cultural policy. With respect to the EU Artificial Intelligence Act, the AI Strategy for Cultural and Creative Sectors and broader AI regulation, BMA takes part in round tables and international conferences, signs joint petitions to the European Commission on AI codes of practice and informs its members about risks and opportunities of AI for music creators. On the Status of the artist, the Culture Compass for Europe and the forthcoming EU Artists’ Charter, BMA organises and co‑organises national forums, prepares policy papers and conducts a comprehensive mapping of the Bulgarian music sector to advocate for a Statute and Register of professional artists, minimum fees and improved funding methodologies aligned with current EU policy debates. Finally, the dissemination of the results from the sector mapping and other evidence‑based analyses contributes to European discussions on the Cultural Data Hub, as BMA presents national data and needs in public events and policy dialogues as an example of how robust information can underpin better cultural policies.
