Mission & Goals
The BHC’s goals are to promote respect for and advocacy of human rights, to advocate for legislative changes to bring Bulgarian legislation in line with international standards, to encourage public debate on human rights issues, and to popularize the human rights idea among the general public. The organization’s work includes defending the rights of the most vulnerable groups: children, women, people in disadvantaged situations, unpopular minorities, and prisoners. The three main directions in the activities of the Bulgarian Helsinki Committee are monitoring the state of human rights in Bulgaria, advocacy and popularization of the human rights idea, and protection of fundamental human rights by legal means. The organization operates separate programs engaged with each of these directions.
