EU Legislative Interests

The organisation Latvijas Mednieku savienība (Latvian Hunters’ Association) represents the interests of Latvian hunters and promotes sustainable hunting practices, nature conservation, biodiversity management, and rural development. Our activities are linked to several EU policy areas and legislative frameworks that affect hunting, wildlife management, and the sustainable use of natural resources. Specifically, our organisation’s interests and interactions concern: EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 and related initiatives under the EU Green Deal, particularly in relation to sustainable use of wild species, management of game populations, and coexistence of conservation objectives with traditional rural activities. Nature Restoration Law (COM/2022/304) and the implementation of the Birds Directive (2009/147/EC) and the Habitats Directive (92/43/EEC) — focusing on the management of species of hunting interest and their habitats. Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) — especially measures under rural development and agri-environmental schemes that influence wildlife habitats and the socio-economic role of hunting in rural communities. Firearms Regulation and Firearms Directive (Directive (EU) 2021/555) — concerning the lawful possession, transport, and use of hunting firearms. EU Animal Health Law (Regulation (EU) 2016/429) and Food Safety legislation, particularly with regard to game meat and disease control (e.g., African swine fever). EU Forest Strategy and EU Climate Policy — insofar as they affect forest and wildlife management practices. Description of activities involving EU institutions: Latvijas Mednieku savienība monitors EU legislative and policy developments relevant to hunting and biodiversity, provides feedback through consultations and position papers, and participates in stakeholder dialogues, conferences, and expert groups when appropriate. The organisation also cooperates with European hunting and conservation umbrella bodies (such as FACE – the European Federation for Hunting and Conservation) to represent the views and experience of Latvian hunters at EU level. Our interactions with EU institutions are therefore limited to policy monitoring, information exchange, and advocacy activities aimed at promoting sustainable hunting and nature conservation consistent with EU environmental and rural development objectives.
