Mission & Goals
BREL ASBL is a new European platform for policy review established as a Belgian not-for-profit association. The remit of the platform is to attract new thinking on how to unleash sustained and secure growth and better regulation within Europe’s unique social model at a time of global change and uncertainty. The platform aims to bring together the best brains in informal settings, virtual or in-person, to debate how Europe can best make the necessary policy trade-offs to move forward. The modus operandi of the platform: • To periodically convene in high-level roundtable format current or former policymakers, academics and/or private interests, moderated each time by a recognised figure in the EU policy field. • To produce summary reports of deliberations and practical conclusions for action. The reports may, if all participants agree, be publicised and/or be submitted to decision-makers. • To publish calls for papers elaborating on key themes emerging from the above deliberations.
EU Legislative Interests
BREL will identify a broad spectrum of policies relevant to its remit, spanning business-related regulation but also including any initiatives relevant to making the European social model more robust. In a first phase, BREL will focus on the following: Third Omnibus Package incl. Small Mid Caps and Removal of Paper Requirements Review of Securitisation Framework Savings and Investments Union Digital Network Act Digital Fairness Act Post-2027 MFF including new Own Resources (CORE, TED...) Evaluation of Public Procurement Directives

The Parliament magazine event scheduled for 30 September 2025 in cooperation with the European Regulation and Innovation Forum (ERIF).

BREL will partner or cooperate with a number of respected Brussels-based thank tanks and platforms depending on the specific area of policy or regulation under review. • BREL is partnering with the European Risk and Innovation Forum with a view to co-organising at least one event in 2025 • BREL is partnering with the Theophano Foundation, based in Thessaloniki, Greece, whose remit is to identify individuals or initiatives embodying European values in action. An annual Empress Theophano Prize is awarded. Previous winners have included the European Commission’s Erasmus Programme. This year’s laureate is European Nostra (‘Our Europe’) for its work in the field of European culture, heritage and identity.
