Mission & Goals
BBC Media Action is a UK-registered charity that works on international development. Founded by the BBC in 1998, we operate as an independent organisation embracing the BBC’s values and editorial standards. Our premise is that responsible media is essential to democracy. We work in the knowledge that change happens when people have access to reliable, timely and useful information and the opportunity to talk about it. We believe in the power of media and communication to help reduce poverty and support people in understanding their rights. Our aim is to inform, connect and empower people around the world. We reach more than 100 million people a year, helping them make sense of events, engage in dialogue and take action to improve their lives. We support media and communication efforts that strengthen governance, improve people’s health, strengthen the resilience of vulnerable groups and help them survive, and recover from, natural disaster and other humanitarian emergencies.
EU Legislative Interests
EU Action Plan on Human Rights and democracy. BBC Media Action's strategic focus on stronger democracies means we work with a range of partners in this area. These including the European Commission and European delegations in many of the countries where we operate.
