Mission & Goals

Foodome Europe is dedicated to transferring and adapting the technology and methodology from the US-based Foodome project to the European food system. Our goal is to create a comprehensive, open-access database of 135,000+ molecules found in food, supporting public health, precision nutrition, and food innovation. We aim to inform EU decision-makers about the scientific foundations of our work—already published in Nature and other high-impact journals—and to promote data-driven food policy. Using mass spectrometry, AI, and network medicine, we analyze how food compounds interact with the human body, microbiome, and disease mechanisms. Foodome Europe seeks to build strong cross-sector collaborations across science, government, and industry to advance a healthier, more transparent food future in the EU.

EU Legislative Interests

The Foodome project directly aligns with and supports several key EU legislative priorities and policy frameworks: EU Farm to Fork Strategy (2020) Central to the European Green Deal, this strategy aims to build fair, healthy, and environmentally friendly food systems. The Foodome project contributes by enabling data-driven analysis of food composition, promoting transparency, nutrition optimization, and sustainable consumption. EU Beating Cancer Plan (2021) Recognizes the role of diet in cancer prevention and calls for improved nutritional information and healthier food environments. Foodome supports this by uncovering hidden food compounds that may play preventive or therapeutic roles. European Health Data Space (EHDS) Aims to promote better exchange and use of health data, including for research and innovation. Foodome generates structured, interoperable, and FAIR biochemical food composition data, contributing directly to this vision. Horizon Europe Mission: Cancer / Soil Health & Food The project supports both missions through its systemic mapping of food compounds, enabling new preventive strategies and improving understanding of diet-health relationships. Digital Europe Programme & AI Act (proposed) Foodome uses advanced AI/ML tools for mass spectrometry annotation and biological prediction, aligning with Europe’s efforts to build trustworthy AI infrastructure in sensitive areas like health and food. EU Strategy on Nutrition and Physical Activity (under revision) The project supports evidence-based policy recommendations through the identification of previously untracked food compounds and their health relevance.

Communication Activities

Communication Activities (events, campaigns, publications, etc.) related to the EU policies above: To support and amplify the Foodome project’s alignment with EU priorities, the following communication and dissemination activities are planned or underway: Scientific Publications & Policy Briefs Peer-reviewed publications in high-impact journals (e.g. Nature Food, Lancet Planetary Health) focusing on the nutritional and biomedical implications of food compounds. Targeted policy briefs tailored to EU stakeholders highlighting how Foodome data can inform regulations under the Farm to Fork Strategy, the EU Beating Cancer Plan, and the Nutrition Strategy. Stakeholder Engagement Events (Brussels-based) Dedicated presentation of the Foodome initiative at the European Parliament and DG SANTE, coordinated with MEPs and EU Commission representatives. Workshops and roundtables with policymakers, public health experts, and food industry leaders to position Foodome as a data backbone for future EU food system reforms. Participation in EU-Supported Conferences & Missions Representation at key EU events such as EU Food2030, Horizon Europe Mission conferences, EIT Food Summits, and Health Data Space forums. Collaboration proposals presented at international symposia on AI in health, food transparency, and digital public goods. Open Access Foodome Portal Launch of a public-facing interactive database and visualization tool, providing transparent access to food composition data aligned with EHDS and FAIR data principles. Educational modules and outreach for citizens, healthcare providers, and schools on how molecular food data can support healthier lifestyle choices. Targeted Campaigns with EU Relevance Communication campaigns around World Obesity Day, World Food Safety Day, and European Week Against Cancer, linking Foodome data to prevention narratives. Bilingual (Spanish and English) content to support dissemination within Spain and across the EU.

Additional Information

We confirm that Foodome Europe is in the process of being formally registered and incorporated, and as such, it is a newly formed entity that has not yet closed its accounts for a full financial year. The purpose of our registration in the EU Transparency Register is to initiate the process of transferring technologies and scientific methodologies from the U.S.-based Foodome research project to Europe, and to engage transparently with European stakeholders and decision-makers during this transition phase. The legal incorporation of Foodome Europe is currently underway, and we will update the Register with our official date of establishment and financial details as soon as they are available.
