Mission & Goals
BFMI was launched in 2021 by a group of media and advocacy experts concerned about the lack of action regarding the alarming decline of media freedom in Southeast Europe. BFMI draws its strength from an International Advisory Board, comprised of experienced professionals in media, policy and diplomacy from the EU, Balkan region, US, and the UK.

Communication Activities
BFMI presented/launched the report on Defunding Disinformation in the European Parliament on 20 September 2023 and the report on Media Censorship and the European Media Freedom Act on 20 November 2024. BFMI authored and shared the following reports with the EU: 1. The Invisible Hand of Media Censorship: Three examples from the Balkans 2. Social Media and the Information War in the Balkans 3. Defunding Disinformation in the Balkans: How international brands support Russia's agenda 4. The Invisible Hand of Media Censorship: A closer look at media ownership in the Balkans and the European Media Freedom Act 5. Hungarian media investment in the Balkans: a test for Europe's media law BFMI also submitted a contribution to the following public consultations: 1. Mid-Term Review of the Multi-annual Financial Framework 2. EU Democracy Shield Initiative 3. 2026 Work Programme of the European Board for Media Services
