Mission & Goals
Avoin yhteiskunta ry is an association founded in 2011, with the purpose of promoting openness as a fundamental societal value and offering citizens better opportunities to participate in societal decision-making. To support these goals, the association began developing the Faktabaari in 2013, which strengthens fact-based public debate by means of fact-checking and deepening information literacy. The association brings together actors who form a support community for the implementation and development of the Faktabaari mission. Faktabaari mission: Faktabaari supports fact-based public debate, digital information literacy and participatory democracy in the digital age. The goal is to strengthen critical thinking and responsible participation.
EU Legislative Interests
Democracy Shield and some digital and data legislation such as DSA and AI act. Initiatives also linked to EU preparedness union, resilience and whole-of-society approach especially in the domain of information.

Communication campaigns especially as part of European Digital Media Observary (EDMO) and it's Nordic hub NORDIS

The funding received from EU programs is solely co-funding for project implementation. It does not cover interest representation towards institution. Along Norman exchange of ideas and dialogue, Avoin yhteiskunta ry engages to meetings with EU institutions and representatives primarily as expert organisation on media and information literacy, fact-checking and citizen engagement in different kinds of invitation events.
